Important History and significance on why we choose to honor Marcus Garvey
(17 August 1887 – 10 June 1940).
Garvey was known as the founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Formed in Jamaica in July 1914, the UNIA aimed to achieve Black nationalism through the celebration of African history and culture.
He was the creator of the Pan-African Flag – A horizontal triband of red, black, and green.
Adopted on August 13th 1920 the three colors on the Black Nationalist flag represent:
RED: the blood that unites all people of Black African ancestry, and shed for liberation;
BLACK: black people whose existence as a nation, though not a nation-state, is affirmed by the existence of the flag; and
GREEN: the abundant natural wealth of Africa
